Samsung this year announced the second generation smartwatches, Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, along with the new Gear Fit, the company’s first curved Super AMOLED wearable device, at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona.
Whats most most talked about the Gear watches is the new operating system, Tizen. The Gear watches don’t run on the Android OS much like Galaxy Gear but will run on the Tizen, a Linux-based operating system. The replacement from the Android system gives these watches a better chance at productive performance.
The New Gear watches from Samsung are about the same size at about 37 by 58 by 10mm, just a millimeter slimmer than the previous Galaxy Gear. Another improvement in the Gear 2 and Gear Neo 2 is the guaranteed longer battery life i.e 2-3 days of typical usage and six days of “low usage,” as compared to the original Gear on an every day basis.
Whats exciting is that the new watches are compatible with “more than dozens” of Samsung smartphones, according to the official press release.
Both the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo have 1.63-inch, 320-by-320 Super AMOLED displays and 1GHz dual-core processors. The Gear 2 has a 2-megapixel camera on the body of the watch and no bulge on the strap thus allowing you to replace the watch band with 6 variable colors. The Neo doesn’t have a camera and also is lighter. The storage is ample with 4GB of internal memory in both the watches. The watches also promise easy functionality , with a little home button takes you out of any app with a quick press.
The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo watches have a bunch of features that include an IR remote control, notifications, phone media controllers, calendar, voice control and voice memo. The phones also have fitness features like the pedometer and the heart rate sensor. They can even play video and music on the watches themselves.
The heart rate monitor that has become one of the most popular features of the Samsung’s newly announced products — the Galaxy S5, the Gear 2, the Gear 2 Neo, and the Gear Fit — works via an optical sensor on the back of the watch and readouts results within 8 seconds. Samsung has promised that more complex and new Fitness app will be added to the Samsung new releases in future.
The Gear 2 Neo comes with a choice of alternatively colored straps. The Gear has a brown option, while the Gear 2 Neo comes in gray. Both models are also available in black and orange.
No discussion is complete on a watch till we don’t discuss its strap and for a Samsung Gear it becomes all the more necessary. The Gear 2 Neo has a polycarbonate wristband that is lighter as compared to the Gear or even the Gear 2.
So in all the new Gear watches can be a better hit than the Galaxy Gear watch launched last year. The Fitness apps, Music and the shift from Android to Tizen can provide some improved performance from the new released Gear watches.
There are reports that Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit will be available from week 14, that is, from the 31st of this month however there is not word on the pricing details at this point. Additionally, the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit will be rolled out to the market a week before the Galaxy S5 becomes available globally.
