The most awaited Smartphone of the year, the Samsung Galaxy S5 which was revealed at the MWC event held at Barcelona in February is now available in India for purchase. The phone is more than an upgrade on the Galaxy S4 with new features like the fingerprint reader, heart rate monitor (Samsung being high on fitness features), download booster along with better display quality, better connectivity and better storage .
The phone which is an upgrade to the S4 looks almost the same like S4 . The S5 is 5.25in as compared to 4.99in screen of S4. The S5 measures 142.0 x 72.5 x 8.1mm and the handset weighs 145g, making it heavier, thicker and larger than the Galaxy S4. The RAM is available at 2GB and the internal storage is the standard 16/32GB which can be expanded with a micro SD card. The phone will run on the latest Android 4.4.2 Kit Kat version of OS.
The phone has 1,920×1,080 resolution falling in between the S4 and Note 3 for its overall size and weight. Also what’s good is that the S5 is also brighter as compared to the S4. The S5 runs at a huge 2.5GHz; also the fastest Android phone and the only handset that comes close is the iPhone 5S.
The battery has been upgraded from Galaxy S4’s 2,600mAh to 2,800mAh. The Galaxy S5 has something called the Ultra Power Saving to prolong the phone’s battery life. As you switch the mode on, it will turn the phone display to monochrome and restricts you to a single screen with a few vital apps you choose. Samsung also claims the phone will give you around 24 hours of battery life from just 10% charge in when in Ultra Power Saving mode.
The Galaxy S5 has a 16MP sensor and Selective Focus feature that allows you to adjust the focus of a shot after the image has been taken. Also what’s great is that you have to wait just 0.3 seconds for taking pictures.
The phone is also catching everybody’s attention because of it back cover. It is a soft-touch textured and has a hard ridged plastic around the edge of the phone. The Galaxy S5 stands out from the other phones in its league because of the eye catching colours. The phone will be available in a range of unique colours including Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold.
Also what’s new with Galaxy S5 is the “My Magazine” which is news and social feed app from Samsung which was seen previously on the Note 3 and Note Pro. You can Swipe left from the homescreen and you’re presented with a picture-rich feed of interests that you can choose from. The service based on Flipboard, allows you to get updates from the popular social networks such as Flickr, Twitter and Google+, and other information categories such as News, Style and Technology.
With Samsung’s constant efforts to be the front runner in the Fitness and Biometrics features, the Samsung S5 couldn’t have missed this one too. The phone has a fingerprint scanner located inside the Home button, and a heart rate monitor on the back just under the camera port. The handset is also water and dust resistant with IP67 certification.
Connectivity and Battery options include super-fast connectivity with global LTE support and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac HT80, MIMO (2×2). Samsung has also included something called “download booster” which leverages both LTE and Wi-Fi connections to speed up sizeable downloads of over 30MB.
